Frequently Asked Questions
What are Shiitake Mushrooms?
Shiitake mushrooms are a popular type of edible mushroom, known for their rich umami flavor and meaty texture. They’re native to East Asia, particularly Japan. The caps are typically dark brown, with a slightly umbrella-like shape. Besides their culinary appeal, shiitake mushrooms are also recognized for their potential health benefits, including boosting the immune system and providing a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
How long do Shiitake Mushrooms take to Grown on Logs?
It typically takes about 1 to 2 years for shiitake mushrooms to begin fruiting on logs, depending on the growing conditions and the size of the logs. After inoculating the logs with shiitake mushroom spores (usually done with spawn plugs or sawdust), the mycelium needs time to colonize the wood fully.
Once the mycelium has fully taken hold (usually within 12 to 24 months), you can start seeing mushrooms grow. For the best results, logs should be kept in a shaded, moist environment. In cooler climates, the mushrooms tend to fruit in the fall and spring
What do Shiitake Mushrooms taste like?
Shiitake Mushrooms have a distinct, savory taste that adds depth to dishes. We feel a fresh Shiitake Mushroom taste similar to fresh buffalo mozzarella so it is soft, creamy texture that is delicacy.
Why do we love Shiitake Mushrooms?
There’s something really special about cultivating Shiitake Mushrooms that takes time and care. Shiitake mushrooms thrive best when grown with attention and patience, often requiring a bit of time to properly cultivate on logs or in specific conditions. Watching them slowly grow and develop their unique flavor is a rewarding process.
